How to build credibility without formal credentials

For many years, I lived frustrated because I didn't have the "credentials" necessary to change careers.

I wanted to enter into the alcohol industry and my degrees in architecture and environmental consulting made getting hired by an alcohol distributor impossible.

Even though I had 9 years' experience executing tastings and events for many premium, wine and spirit brands, they made the determination based on my formal credentials that I was not suitably qualified for any job in their industry.

After years of frustration, I decided to take matters into my own hands and created my first company, All The Tastes of New York, where I curated food and wine experiences.

After I left my job, I quickly realized that with no marketing budget, I needed to find a way to gain exposure for my new company.

It occurred to me as I was hosting an event that showcased New York State Wine and Spirit brands, that the most meaningful way to do that would be to write a book.

In this post and video on my YouTube Channel, I will explore how sharing your knowledge through writing can help you establish yourself without traditional credentials.

Understanding the Power of Writing a Book

Consider your why. Are you trying to solve a problem or share knowledge? Writing a book allows you to showcase your knowledge and experiences while presenting your unique viewpoint. By publishing a book, you position yourself as an authority. This role can change how others see you.

Identify Your Expertise

Before diving into writing, assess where your strengths and passions lie. What excites you? What experiences have shaped your knowledge? Your expertise can derive from life experiences, hobbies, or self-directed learning rather than formal education.

For instance, if you spent years cooking for your family and have developed delicious recipes, you're in a great position to write a cookbook. You don't need to go to cooking school to gain credentials, your experience is more than enough!

Many people deny themselves great opportunities because they don't see their experience and knowledge as having value. Nothing could be further from the truth. Share your lived experiences.

Clarifying your niche allows you to target a specific audience, making your message resonate more. A clear focus helps you write with authority and makes your work feel genuine.

Create a Compelling Outline

Now that you know your topic, it's essential to create a structured outline. A thoughtfully organized outline acts as the backbone of your book. It keeps you focused and helps your ideas flow logically.

Write with Passion and Authenticity

It's important to inject your personality into your writing. Readers appreciate authenticity. While many authors may try emulating successful styles, it's your unique voice that will truly connect.

There is only one you. You are enough exactly as you are.

Share personal stories, insights, or challenges you've faced. For example, in a book about overcoming anxiety, a real-life account of a difficult moment can create a strong emotional connection with readers. Using your story makes your writing relatable, engaging, and memorable. When I wrote Pivot: Because Life Doesn't Always Go As Planned, that is exactly what I did.

I took the opportunity to share all of the challenges and experiences I overcame over the years. I'm not perfect and had no desire to pretend to be. The most interesting thing that happened when I published that book is that my life pivoted again to where I am now. Now I provide individuals who are ready, with the tools and support necessary to pivot into the life they desire.

Publish and Distribute

After completing your manuscript, the next step is publishing. Thanks to self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, getting your book out into the world is more accessible than ever. You don’t need the backing of a traditional publishing house.

To distribute your book effectively, consider hosting events at local bookstores or community centers. The more people learn about your work, the more credibility you'll build.

Leverage Your Book for Speaking Opportunities

Publishing a book paves the way for various speaking engagements. Organizations often look for speakers to address relevant topics, and your book serves as tangible proof of your expertise.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

Building credibility is an ongoing process. Stay dedicated to professional growth by frequently seeking knowledge in your field. Participate in workshops, read books, and connect with others who share your interests.

As you learn and grow, consider updating your book or writing sequels. Keeping your content relevant and timely will position you as a lifelong learner. Authors who continue to evolve in their fields often see an increase in their credibility and audience engagement.

Your Path to Authentic Authority
